What to Expect When InSight Lands on Mars
If all goes well, anxious space fans on Earth will learn of a successful InSight landing on Mars on Monday, 26 November 2018, at 19:53 UTC. As with all Mars landings, no one who is watching will be able to do anything to affect the outcome; all we can do is wait and hope everything works. NASA’s Curiosity Rover on Mars Is Rolling (and Drilling) Again
After suffering a couple technical glitches that have put NASA’s Curiosity rover off its duties on Mars this year, the robotic explorer seems to be back in full health, having driven to a new site and drilled a sampling hole, according to NASA statements.

China baut neue Mondrakete
China hat mit dem Bau einer Trägerrakete der neuen Generation für bemannte Flüge zum Mond begonnen. Feature – ISS Horizions Mission Alexander Gerst
Horizons’ is the name of ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst’s second mission to the International Space Station.
The mission name evokes exploring our Universe, looking far beyond our planet and broadening our knowledge. Alexander would also like to make people realise that there is always a chance to go beyond their personal horizons. Alexander will be launched on 6 June with US astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Prokopyev from the Baikonur cosmodrome, Kazakhstan in the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft.
Alexander will take over command of the International Space Station for the second half of his mission. Alexander Gerst is the 11th German citizen to fly into space. The astronaut is now in the last stages of training for his challenging spaceflight. The science programme is packed with European research: more than 50 experiments will deliver benefits to people back on Earth and prepare for future space exploration.
“Horizons” – die neue Mission von Alexander Gerst
“Horizons” – so heißt die nächste Mission des deutschen ESA-Astronauten Alexander Gerst. Anfang Juni 2018 soll der 41-jährige Geophysiker mit der Expedition 56/57 seine zweite “Forschungsreise” zur Internationalen Raumstation ISS antreten. Gerst wird nach dem Belgier Frank de Winne der zweite Europäer sein, der als Kommandant auf der ISS eingesetzt wird. Knapp fünf Monate – bis Ende Oktober 2018 – soll Gerst in knapp 400 Kilometern Höhe unterwegs sein. Der englische Name der Mission, Horizons, symbolisiert dabei die Neugier und Faszination, Unbekanntes zu entdecken und zu erforschen.
Alexander Gerst: als Kommandant auf die ISS
Podcast auf Omega Tau. Dort wird über die Aufgaben des Kommandanten, über die Ausbildung zum Astronaut generell und zum Kommandant im Speziellen, sowie über wissenschaftliche Experimente auf der ISS gesprochen. Natürlich kommen auch seine Eindrücke während seines früheren Fluges 2014 zur Sprache.
41 Experimente des Alexander Gerst sind “made in Germany”
Wie kann Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) den Astronauten bei ihrem Job im All helfen und was lernen wir für die Anwendung auf der Erde daraus? Wie verhalten sich lebende Zellen in Schwerelosigkeit? Was macht der Aufenthalt im All mit unserem Immunsystem? Wie lassen sich aus Schmelzprozessen auf der ISS die industriellen Gießprozesse auf der Erde verbessern? Was können wir vom Wanderverhalten der Tiere über den Klimawandel lernen? Diese und viele weitere wissenschaftlich und gesellschaftlich relevante Fragen sollen auf der Internationalen Raumstation ISS in 41 deutschen Experimenten beantwortet werden, die das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) für die nächste Mission von Alexander Gerst zur ISS – “horizons – Wissen für Morgen”- koordiniert und steuert.
Die Maus im Weltall – Die Seite mit der Maus
Am 06. Juni 2018 pünktlich um 13:12 Uhr ist unser Maustronaut Alexander Gerst zusammen mit der Maus zu seiner zweiten Mission ins Weltall gestartet. Sechs Monate wird er auf der Internationalen Raumstation ISS verbringen, drei Monate lang sogar als Kommandant. Die neue Mission trägt den Titel “Horizons”, das ist englisch und bedeutet “Horizonte”. Denn Alexander will herausfinden, was sich hinter dem Horizont verbirgt – und Maus und Elefant werden ihn dabei begleiten.
Das ist jetzt die Crew auf der ISS: In der hinteren Reihe schweben die Astronauten Oleg Artjemjew, Andrew Feustel, Richard Arnold und die Maus. Vorne siehst du Sergej Prokopjew, Alexander Gerst und Serena Auñón-Chancellor. Auf dem Foto hinter der Crew ist der russische Ingenieur Sergei Koroljow zu erkennen, der ein großer Weltraumpionier war.

Der Rat der Chefkonstrukteure des russischen Segments hat Grünes Licht für den Start der nächsten Mannschaft zur Internationalen Raumstation ISS und die Rückkehr der derzeitigen Besatzung gegeben. So fliegen der Russe Oleg Kononenko, der Kanadier David Saint-Jacques und die Amerikanerin Anne McClain am 3. Dezember zur Station, teilte die GK Roskosmos mit. Am 20. Dezember kehren der Russe Sergej Prokopjew, die Amerikanerin Serena Aunon-Chancellor und der deutsche ESA-Astronaut Alexander Gerst auf die Erde zurück.

Noch ist der NASA-Lander Insight auf dem Weg zum Mars. Ende November soll er dort ankommen und darauf Platz nehmen. Dieses Rendezvous wird dem Roten Planeten tatsächlich unter die Haut gehen. Die NASA ist dem Mars bereits mehrfach zu Leibe gerückt – unter anderem mit den Rovern Opportunity und Curiosity sowie den Sonden Odyssey, MRO und Maven. Am 5. Mai 2018 wurde der stationäre Lander InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) zum Schnüffeln losgeschickt. InSight startete mithilfe einer rund 57 Meter großen Atlas-V-401-Rakete von der Vandenberg Air Force Basis in Kalifornien und soll am 26. November auf dem Roten Planeten ankommen. Dann wird der Lander für rund zwei Jahre zum geduldigen Spürhund.
Nasa’s InSight mission will target ‘Marsquakes’
InSight will be the first probe to focus its investigations predominantly on the interior of the Red Planet. The lander – due to touch down in November – will put seismometers on the surface to feel for “Marsquakes”. These tremors should reveal how the underground rock is layered – data that can be compared with Earth to shed further light on the formation of the planets 4.6 billion years ago. “As seismic waves travel through [Mars] they pick up information along the way; as they travel through different rocks,” explained Dr Bruce Banerdt, InSight’s principal investigator. “And all those wiggles you see on seismograms – scientists understand how to pull that information out. After we’ve gotten many, many Marsquakes from different directions, we can put together a three dimensional view of the inside of Mars.”

NASA has chosen an area in the Elysium Planitia – high plains near the Martian equator – as the site for the landing of the InSight spacecraft later this month (November 26, 2018). Of 22 sites considered, only Elysium Planitia met the basic engineering constraints, and was also neither too rocky or too windy.

U.S., Russian Rockets Preparing to Resupply Station This Weekend
A U.S. rocket stands at its launch pad at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia counting down to a Thursday morning launch. On the other side of the world in Kazakhstan, a Russian rocket is being processed for its launch Friday afternoon. California is burning again, and satellites are showing the scope of the damage. The Landsat 8 spacecraft, which is run jointly by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), captured dramatic imagery Thursday (Nov. 8) of the Camp Fire. The fast-moving blaze has destroyed the Northern California town of Paradise, killed at least nine people and sent smoke billowing across much of the state.

Massive Solar Eruptions ‘Probably’ Detonated Dozens of US Sea Mines in Vietnam War
An extraordinary account of the impact space weather had on military operations in Vietnam in 1972 was found buried in the U.S. Navy archives, according to a newly published article in Space Weather. On August 4, 1972, the crew of a U.S. Task Force 77 aircraft flying near a naval minefield in the waters off Hon La observed 20 to 25 explosions over about 30 seconds. They also witnessed an additional 25 to 30 mud spots in the waters nearby.

BEXUS: Suche nach Leben in der Stratosphäre
Im Rahmen der Projekts BEXUS sind Mitte Oktober wieder zwei Forschungsballone von Kiruna aus in eine Höhe von rund 27 Kilometern aufgestiegen. There are diamonds in the sky, and they’ve been cut naturally. This image show dramatic dark areas in the Sun’s corona and was acquired by the SWAP instrument on ESA’s Proba-2 mission at midday on Wednesday, 7 November. The dark areas are ‘coronal holes’ – areas of open magnetic field in the Sun’s corona that emit charged particles as high-speed solar wind that spreads into space.

The universe, it seems, is pretty pleased with the Hubble Space Telescope. I mean, just look at that smile! It’s especially poignant given the troubles the aging Hubble had recently when balky gyroscopes knocked the space telescope offline for weeks until a fix could be devised. It’s Business Time! Rocket Lab Lofts 6 Satellites on 1st Commercial Launch
The spaceflight startup’s Electron rocket aced its first commercial flight tonight (Nov. 10), lofting six small satellites and a technology demonstrator to low-Earth orbit, about 310 miles (500 kilometers) above our planet. The mission, which Rocket Lab called “It’s Business Time,” lifted off from the company’s New Zealand launch site at 10:50 p.m. EST (0350 GMT and 4:50 p.m. local New Zealand time on Nov. 11). SpaceX’s workhorse Falcon 9 rocket can now launch NASA’s most expensive and highest-priority science missions. A miniaturised model of the Juice spacecraft during electromagnetic tests at ESA’s technical heart in the Netherlands. Juice, or the Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer, is ESA’s future mission to explore the most massive planet in Solar System and its large moons Ganymede, Europa and Callisto. Planned for launch in June 2022, it will embark on a seven-year cruise that will make use of several flybys – of Earth, Venus, Earth, Mars, and Earth again – before leaving the inner Solar System en route to Jupiter.

Dual Cargo Missions Set for Friday Launch and Sunday Delivery
Dismal weather on Virginia’s Atlantic coast has pushed back the launch of a U.S. cargo craft to the International Space Station one day to Friday. Russia’s resupply ship is still on track for its launch to the orbital lab from Kazakhstan less than nine hours later on the same day. Mission managers from NASA and Northrop Grumman are now targeting the Cygnus space freighter’s launch on Friday at 4:23 a.m. EST from Pad-0A at Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. Cygnus sits atop an Antares rocket packed with approximately 7,400 pounds of crew supplies, science experiments, spacesuit gear, station hardware and computer resources.

Colonizing Mars Means Contaminating Mars — And Never Knowing For Sure If It Had Its Own Native Life
The closest place in the universe where extraterrestrial life might exist is Mars, and human beings are poised to attempt to colonize this planetary neighbor within the next decade. Before that happens, we need to recognize that a very real possibility exists that the first human steps on the Martian surface will lead to a collision between terrestrial life and biota native to Mars. If the red planet is sterile, a human presence there would create no moral or ethical dilemmas on this front. But if life does exist on Mars, human explorers could easily lead to the extinction of Martian life. As an astronomer who explores these questions in my book “Life on Mars: What to Know Before We Go,” I contend that we Earthlings need to understand this scenario and debate the possible outcomes of colonizing our neighboring planet in advance. Maybe missions that would carry humans to Mars need a timeout.
