Rosetta ‚post-mission‘ – new findings relating to the temperature and nature of the comet’s surface

Two-and-a-half years have passed since the operational phase of the Rosetta mission came to an end in September 2016. However, scientific evaluation of the enormous amounts of data from the instruments on the spacecraft and the Philae lander is still ongoing.

Dragon Cargo Mission Launch No Earlier than May 3

On April 29, the space station team identified an issue with one of the station’s Main Bus Switching Units that distributes power to two of the eight power channels on the station.  There are no immediate concerns for the crew or the station. Teams are working on a plan to robotically replace the failed unit and restore full power to the station system. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available. The earliest possible launch opportunity is no earlier than Friday, May 3.

Anfang 2000 hatte das MPI für Radioastronomie ob dieses Papers die Hoffnung ausgesprochen, dass „die Weiterentwicklung bereits vorhandener astronomischer Beobachtungsmethoden es Astronomen bald erlauben könnte, die verworrenen Wege von Photonen zu verfolgen, die nur um Haaresbreite den Fängen eines Schwarzen Lochs entkommen sind“: Die entscheidende Entdeckung war nämlich gewesen, dass der ‚Schatten‘ des Schwarzen Lochs vor umgebendem strahlendem Gas durch die Lichtablenkung in seinem eigenen extremen Schwerefeld winkelmäßig deutlich vergrößert wird, wenn auch nur auf etwa 50 Mikrobogensekunden.

It’s been 2½ months since NASA’s piano-size New Horizons zipped past a tiny target in the Kuiper Belt in the first hours of New Year’s Day. SwRI-led LAMP instrument sheds light on lunar water movement

Using the Southwest Research Institute-led Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP) aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), scientists have observed water molecules moving around the dayside of the Moon. A paper published in Geophysical Research Letters describes how LAMP measurements of the sparse layer of molecules temporarily stuck to the surface helped characterize lunar hydration changes over the course of a day. Up until the last decade or so, scientists thought the Moon was arid, with any water existing mainly as pockets of ice in permanently shaded craters near the poles. More recently, scientists have identified surface water in sparse populations of molecules bound to the lunar soil, or regolith. The amount and locations vary based on the time of day. This water is more common at higher latitudes and tends to hop around as the surface heats up.

On 28 February 2019, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) ‘Mole’ fully automatically hammered its way into the Martian subsurface for the first time. In a first step, it penetrated to a depth between 18 and 50 centimetres into the Martian soil with 4000 hammer blows over a period of four hours. „On its way into the depths, the mole seems to have hit a stone, tilted about 15 degrees and pushed it aside or passed it,“ reports Tilman Spohn, Principal Investigator of the HP3 experiment.
