Feature – ISS Horizions Mission Alexander Gerst

‘Horizons’ is the name of ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst’s second mission to the International Space Station. The mission name evokes exploring our Universe, looking far beyond our planet and broadening our knowledge. Alexander would also like to make people realise that there is always a chance to go beyond their personal horizons.Alexander will be launched on 6 June with US astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Prokopyev from the Baikonur cosmodrome, Kazakhstan in the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft. Alexander will take over command of the International Space Station for the second half of his mission. Alexander Gerst is the 11th German citizen to fly into space.The astronaut is now in the last stages of training for his challenging spaceflight. The science programme is packed with European research: more than 50 experiments will deliver benefits to people back on Earth and prepare for future space exploration.

Quite a wide variety of science activities took place today aboard the International Space Station exploring time perception, exercise and eyesight. The Expedition 56 crew members also worked on station plumbing, stowed satellite deployer gear and checked out communications gear.
The Expedition 56 crew members are configuring the International Space Station for several new experiments being delivered on the upcoming SpaceX Dragon cargo mission. The orbital residents also explored space physics and serviced U.S. spacesuits.
Today’s science activities aboard the International Space Station are looking to improve cancer therapies and benefit cement processing on Earth. Meanwhile, two astronauts are practicing to capture the SpaceX Dragon cargo craft next week.

China’s second space lab dived unexpectedly toward Earth this month, just two months after its predecessor crashed uncontrolled into our planet’s atmosphere.
China has lowered the orbit of its Tiangong-2 space lab, likely in preparation for deorbiting the orbital facility and thus averting a similar scenario to the uncontrolled re-entry of Tiangong-1 earlier this year.

Köln,  25. Juni 2018 —   Seit knapp sechs Monaten steht das Gewächshaus EDEN-ISS in der Antarktis, und seit vier Monaten betreut es Paul Zabel vom Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) allein. Nun hat es den vollen Betrieb erreicht,  wie das DLR am Montag in Köln mitteilte.
Mit dem Experiment „Eden ISS“ wollten Forscher herausfinden, wie Gemüse unter Extrembedingungen wächst. Nun zeigen die Ergebnisse aus dem Antarktis-Gewächshaus: Gurken gedeihen hervorragend, Paprika nicht so.
